The bucket fills within two to three days in a household with two adults. A hole 600mm is dug measuring approximately 400mm wide. The bucket of humanure is then emptied into the hole and comfrey is planted to assist in the breakdown of the waste. It is also important to ensure that you do not dig near any water ways as they could become polluted.
Adding plants is very useful as they convert a lot of their waste into useful substances through photosynthesis. This is the first step in the recycling of the waste as the plant can be used as mulch to feed the nutrients back into the soil.
The humanure pits can then be re-used within a couple of months to a year. This will depend on how quickly the waste is broken down by the enzymes in the soil. Keeping the humanure dry and mixed with soils and ash ensures the breakdown is easy and quick.
